Smart Packaging – RFID Labels

Smart Packaging - RFID Labels

Smart packaging is packaging that goes far beyond protecting and preserving a product.  Advances in technology mean that packaging or labels can have the ability of a two-way communication, interacting with consumers, with the environment.

RFID refers to Radio Frequency Identification – a wireless system comprised of tags and readers.  RFID is another type of technology that is revolutionising business operations across many countries.

How does RFID work?

The RFID tags are electronic devices that use radio waves to communicate a product’s information and data to a nearby ‘reader’- a device that emits radio waves and receives signals back.  Tags can be passive or active.

Passive RFID tags are considered consumable and inexpensive and only transmit stored data when they receive a signal from an RFID antenna, i.e powered by the reader. Companies can then retain and analyse the information collected, especially in retail, manufacturing, and warehousing. Passive RFID tags are used in the supply chain for access control and file tracking.

Active RFID tags are commonly used to track the real-time location of assets. They are battery-powered and continuously broadcast their signal to an RFID reader. Active RFID systems are usually bulkier than passive RFID tags, but they last considerably longer.

What is RFID used for?

RFID technology means that everyone in the supply chain can track and access every product’s data and location information. When embedded in labels and packaging, companies can track the item from production to its final destination on the shelf.

RFID tagging offers the following benefits:

  • Provides manufacturers with real-time visibility to products at every stage of the supply chain
  • Improved inventory management, faster and more accurate
  • Helps to prevent theft and fraud
  • Product traceability aids product recall
  • Speeds up delivery times

RFID tags or labels also provide additional security for customers as they share accurate, real-time information.  Many models of smartphones can read RFID tags which enhances a customer’s experience with the product and builds brand loyalty. A consumer could have access to ingredients, allergy information, nutritional value, complimentary products, offers and promotions.

And there are environmental benefits too.

By running a tighter inventory and improving management practices, excess stock can be reduced thus minimalising the possibility of waste. Consumers can also learn if a product is recyclable or not.

The possibilities for RFID are boundless and we expect to see increased usage of this technology. Aside from the manufacturing and sustainable benefits, RFID will help brands stand out in the marketplace, support a stronger consumer bond and enhance the value of the product itself.
