| The company
now had no choice but to change if it was to survive.
The printing department was closed down and the production
of hand-made bags ended. The market for polythene bags
was increasing hand in hand with the rise of the supermarket
chains; to take advantage of this the company bought
its first machine for making polythene bags in 1975.
Two years later, a four colour flexographic
printing press was acquired and the firm began to expand
both its polythene converting department and its flexographic
printing department. A little later a more sophisticated
eight colour press was installed in a new building at
Bank Mills.
By the end of the 1970's the company was
making millions of paper, polythene and carrier bags
every week. One of the firms major purchases was polythene.
A polythene extrusion business near Huddersfield went
into receivership and Roberts Mart was able to purchase
the firms assets. Roberts Mart set up the new business,
which became Romar Packaging in June 1983. Romar now
supplies some forty percent of its production to Roberts
Mart, selling the remainder externally.
In the 1980’s Roberts Mart patented
the “Roll Pack” a duvet packaging system
which was extended subsequently to pillows and sleeping
bags.
At the end of 2000, after 60 years of
dedication to Roberts Mart, Peter Roberts was succeeded
as chairman by his son John Roberts.
